More About This Coffee:

Peru | Grade.1 Organic San Martin refers to
a high-quality, single-origin Arabica coffee grown organically in the San Martín region of northern Peru. The "Grade.1" classification signifies that it meets the highest standards for specialty coffee.
Profile of San Martín coffee
  • Origin: Coffee is sourced from the lush, biodiverse San Martín region in the northern highlands of Peru. The beans are typically cultivated by smallholder producers, often organized into cooperatives like
    Agraria Cafetalera
     and  .
  • Growing conditions: Grown at high elevations, usually between 1,200 and 1,900 meters, where the cooler mountain climate and rich, volcanic soil help the beans mature slowly.
  • Processing: After being selectively hand-picked, the beans are typically fully washed and sun-dried, a process that ensures a clean and consistent cup.
  • Certifications: As an organic coffee from this region, it is often certified as such, and some batches may also carry Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certifications.

Typical flavor notes
The flavor profile of San Martín coffee is generally considered balanced and versatile. A medium roast often highlights these qualities:
  • Acidity: Delicate and gentle, with citrus notes.
  • Sweetness: Subtle and honey-like, with hints of caramel.
  • Body: Medium and silky.
  • Taste: Common notes include milk chocolate, toasted nuts, and subtle stone or dried fruit.

What "Grade.1" means
Grade 1, or "Specialty Grade," is the highest quality designation for coffee beans. This classification is based on specific criteria for both green and roasted beans.
  • Minimal defects: For a coffee to be considered Grade 1, a sample must have very few or no defects, such as unripe or improperly roasted beans.
  • Distinct profile: The coffee should have a distinct, standout attribute in its taste, acidity, body, or aroma.
  • Consistent quality: It must also have a moisture content between 9% and 13% and no "cup faults," which are undesirable flavors or taints.
